Program Expectations
- The goal is to develop the players to the best of their abilities and to form the best teams to represent West Raleigh.
- Players will learn how to compete, develop, and understand the fundamentals of the game.
- All coaches have different expectations and coaching styles.
- West Raleigh’s All Star Program goal is to get players better everyday and winning is a byproduct of the work they put in.
- Coaches are encouraged to put players in different positions to help them develop their skill set and learn where the players help the team the most.
- Coaches are encouraged to outline the expectations they have for their players and families to mitigate any confusion or conflicts.
- Player safety is a priority with the amount of events teams may have. It is important that parents and coaches have clear expectations and communication throughout the season.
Coaching:
- All Head Coaches must be a Head Coach during the Spring season for the West Raleigh Baseball League. Unless West Raleigh cannot provide resources, the Executive Director, All Star Commissioner and League Commissioner will make recommendations.
- All-Star coaches who are in good standing with the league and have no red-flag issues will be named as the Head Coach for their respective age group after the season-ending evaluations have been submitted and reviewed by the Executive Director.
- Head Coaches will be approved no later than February of the given year.
- The Head Coach selection process may vary by league. The criteria for selecting Head Coaches may include specifically, but not exclusively:
- Experience coaching youth sports, including baseball
- Experience within baseball
- Experience within West Raleigh
- Feedback and comments from coaches and All Star evaluations
- Feedback from other parents and coaches
- Demonstrated values consistent with the values and mission of West Raleigh Baseball Association
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- A brief interview, if necessary
- If there are more coaching applicants than positions available, the All Star commissioner and Executive Director will be responsible for making the selection. All Head Coaches must be approved by the Board of Directors.
- Head Coaches are responsible for scheduling, rostering, and following the rules and regulations of Cal Ripken/PONY and the tournaments entered.
- At no time will coaches schedule events during the Spring season when a player has a West Raleigh League event (must have approval by All Star Commissioner and Executive Director)
- Coaches are responsible for their players AND parents' behavior at all events. Any misconduct will result in removal from the team with the discretion of the All Star Commissioner, Executive Director and Board of Directors.
- Head Coaches will follow the Pitch Smart guidelines. Coaches who do not follow will be subject to suspension or removal from Head Coaching.
Player Participation Notes:
- Players must play in the WR Spring regular season for consideration to the All Star program.
- Players will indicate their interest in the All Star program registration February 15-27, 2025.
- Players interested in the All Star Program will attend an evaluation workout - March 2, 2025 (schedule TBD).
- Player evaluations will be held during the Spring season.
- All evaluations and vote will be submitted by the Spring League Head Coaches whom will employ their resources to evaluate any player interested in being considered for a WR All Star team.
- The coaches will put forth a vote on or before the second week of April to best represent WR at the All Star level.
- Spring Head Coaches are expected and held accountable to evaluate all registered players at practices, games, etc.
- For all All Star baseball events (Spring and Summer) an effort should and will be made to avoid conflicts, if possible. Should a conflict arise, West Raleigh League practices and games take precedence over All Star practices and events.
- Players who are voted on the Blue, Red, or White rosters, that is their invite to participate in the West Raleigh All Star program. If a family chooses not to accept the invitation, they will not be placed onto a West Raleigh All Star roster.
- If families have a conflict with the schedule of a particular all star team, they must submit a request to remove their child for consideration from that team's roster vote. The request must be sent by March 14th via email to league@westraleighbaseball.org providing a detailed explanation and supporting documentation where relevant. The Executive Director and Commissioner will review all requests, and there is no guarantee that 1) a request will be granted, and 2) that the child will be selected for any all star team — an approval to remove your child’s eligibility for a particular team will limit your child's chances of making an all star team.
- If committed to play on a West Raleigh All Star team, playing on another (i.e., non-WR) travel or all star team during the all star season is strictly prohibited. Players knowingly playing on another (non-WR) travel team will be subject to dismissal from the West Raleigh All Star program. Should coaches be aware that players on their team are playing for a non-WR travel team, they should communicate this knowledge with the All Star Commissioner.
- Participation in a Scholastic Sport (e.g., Middle School) is allowed and encouraged.
- Previous participation on a West Raleigh All Star team does not guarantee future placement.
- Age cutoff is the age the player is on or before April 30th.
Additional Notes
- Extreme concern must be given to player safety and arm care. To allow each team (9U – 12U) to form earlier, we must not sacrifice the safety and well-being of our players.
- Communication between Coaches (e.g., Blue & Red; All Star and Regular Season) will be vitally important to ensure the process goes smoothly and is a good experience for all players and families.
- Uniform designs and color schemes must be consistent between teams (Blue, Red and White) and across age groups (8U – 12U).
- Adding Guest Players for a West Raleigh All Star team is at the discretion of the Executive Director, given the circumstances that West Raleigh can't provide.
