When is the tryout for your child’s league?
Please review the Spring 2023 Tryout Schedule
Tryout times are based on your child’s age as of 4/30/23.
What should I expect at tryouts?
We will have over 400 players attending the tryouts, including players from age 6 – 12 (as of April 30, 2023). This includes returning players who are entering a new division, as well as new players to the league. Check-in will be at the tent in front of the concession stand. Once you are checked-in and have received your tryout number, you will be directed to the field your session will be held on.
Typically, tryouts consist of: catching 3-4 ground balls at short stop and throwing them to 1st base, catching 1-2 pop ups throwing into short stop or home, and 5 swings/hits (with the 5th pitch running home to 2nd base). Keep in mind, coaches are watching not only for mechanics and ability but also how players recover when they don’t make the play/get the hit.
We ask parents to watch from the bleachers during tryouts. Coaches and organizers will give instructions and make sure the players know what they need to do. We ask that parents refrain from giving their child directions during their child’s tryout.
What should I bring to tryouts?
Players should wear baseball or athletic attire and rubber cleats. They should bring a glove, a bat (with a USA stamp), and a batting helmet. If your child is planning to tryout for a catcher position (Minors and Majors only), they should bring catchers equipment if they have it.
You should also plan to provide a birth certificate (original or a copy) if you are new to West Raleigh (this also includes current MCP players).
What if my child is not available that day?
If you child is not available and you are still interested in consideration for the draft, you may submit a video tryout to firstname.lastname@example.org. The video(s) should include your child throwing and catching, fielding (5 ground balls and 2 pop flys), hitting (5 – 6 pitches) and running around the bases. Please submit the video(s) to email@example.com by Monday, February 6.
